The Body Breathing & Sleeping Arts

Ways of Maintaining Health and Prolonging Life Breathing is essential to life. Everyone knows this, but few people know there are a great many different breathing styles. Even fewer people know how to improve their own process of breathing. Instead, everyone breathes in the same way ? through the nose or through the mouth. Many people think that their noses and lungs are the only organs that help them to breathe. They forget about the largest organ: the skin, with its pores and capillaries. In Chinese Chigong, we breathe though our pores! We call this technique the Body Breathing Art. It is similar to the way that plants breathe. While people and animals have noses, plants do not. Instead, plants breathe through their pores. This breathing method allows trees to live much longer than human beings, and to grow very tall while putting down deep roots. If you learn the Body Breath and practice it every day, you too will achieve good health and a longer life.

In Chinese Chigong (qigong), breath work plays a very important role in healing and achieving a high quality of life. Different breathing styles in Chinese Chigong lead to different life styles.

Body Breath is a basic breathing style. Many chigong forms were developed based on this one single breathing style. It is exquisitely simple and incredible beneficial. It may totally change your health and your life.

THE BODY BREATHING ART

Beginning now, use Body Breath instead of your normal breathing. It is a pleasant experience. It is easy to do: When you breathe in, imagine all of the genuine chi (healthy energy) in the universe entering your body though your pores over the entire surface of your body. As you breathe out, imagine that all of your body's ill chi (negative energy) is being emitted out through your pores and away from your body to the very far distance. In this way, you can exchange the ill chi in your body for the genuine chi in the universe.

Body Breathing has many advantages over normal breathing- It keeps your body free from negative chi, thereby improving your health. Many health problems are caused by the accumulation of negative chi. If the negative chi in your body accumulates to a certain level you will develop a health problem. The Body Breath is one way you can continuously remove negative chi from your body.

Body Breathing can also protect you from the intrusion of negative chi around you. Most people are surrounded by some form of negative chi? from an ill person, a bad animal, a dead plant, bad air, or something else. If you are good at Body Breathing, you will not be harmed by presence of this negative chi in your environment.

The biggest advantage of Body Breath over normal breath is that it can effectively relieve stress, tension and pain. It will bring you to a pleasant, relaxed state that you can really enjoy, and help you to develop your chi power as a capacity to help others.

Practicing the Walking Art, as described below, is a great way to successfully incorporate Body Breathing in your daily life:

THE WALKING ART ?the Art of Exchanging Ill Chi for Genuine Chi

Walk slowly and naturally in a relaxed, calm manner. Breathe in and out slowly, deeply and smoothly. With each inhalation, imagine that all of the genuine chi in the universe is entering your body through your pores from all directions. As you breathe out, imagine that all of the negative chi in your body is being emitted out through your pores to the far distance. You can practice the Walking Art anywhere, any time, but it is best practiced outdoors where there is plenty of fresh air. Once you have mastered the basic Walking Art technique, it is time to learn to slow down your breath. You will learn to do this in two stages:

Stage 1: Walk three steps while completing a single inhalation, then walk another three steps while exhaling. Once you have mastered this, practice taking six steps as you breathe in and another six as you breathe out. Do not speed up your walk?walk at the same speed, but breathe more slowly. After you can make six steps as you breathe in and six steps as you breathe out, try to slow down your breath again and make 9 steps as you breathe in and 9 steps as you breathe out. Next, try 12 steps and finally 24 steps.

Stage 2: In this stage, you will learn to slow down your breath, pausing between each inhalation and exhalation. First, breathe in slowly and make three steps, then hold your breath and make another three steps. Finally, while breathing out make three more steps. With practice, you can slow down your breath until you can make 6, 9 , 12 steps and finally 24 steps as you breathe in, as you hold your breath and as you breathe out.

THE SLEEPING ARTS (LYING or RECLINING ARTS)

The Sleeping Art is also called "Sleeping Immortal". It is suitable for everyone regardless of age, sex or physical stamina. By practicing the Sleeping Art, you can effectively relieve stress, tension, tiredness and pain, and be energized in spirit, vigor and physical strength. You can practice it any time, anywhere, during a brief nap or throughout a full night's sleep. Normally, people find that evening and night times are the most convenient for practicing the Sleeping Art. Since most people spend eight hours each day sleeping, combining chigong with sleep can produce great benefits. There are nine different forms of the Sleeping Art,
each of which is practiced for a different purpose. You can choose one or a few of them to practice according to your health condition or your particular interests. You can also practice all of them alternately.

BODY UNIVERSE CIRCULATION

(XIAO ZHOU TIAN)

Introduction

Body Universe Circulation(Xiao Zhou Tian in Chinese) is the essence of Chinese Chigong. Until recently, it had been kept in secret for more than a thousand years by a few ancient Chigong masters and their emperors. Because this technique is very effective against aging and many kinds of diseases, it is also called the Art of Longevity and the Art of Internal Medicine (Neidan Shu).

In ancient China, Chigong masters and emperors sought for the way to longevity. In the early stages of this quest, they believed that there must be a substance which could help humans to live forever. They tried melting some special materials together to obtain pills (called "Dan" in Chinese). The pills which they made in this way were called "external Dan". Unfortunately, the External Dan did not allow people to live forever. The Chigong masters realized that it was impossible to live forever with the help of an external medicine. They knew that people live because they have Chi (vital energy or life force). People get old as their Chi gets weak and a person dies when Chi has gone from his/her body. If one wanted to live forever, a way had to be found to prevent the weakening of Chi. It was for this purpose that an internal healing art, called Xiao Zhou Tian or body Universe Circulation, was invented. Its purpose was to enhance internal chi and to prolong life. People, of course, can not live forever but they can live significantly longer by practicing Body Universe Circulation.

It has been proven over the past fifteen hundred years that the Body Universe Circulation (Xiao Zhou Tian) can effectively improve health and prolong life. However, this art is unknown to most of the world's population and particularly to people in the West. This article is written to introduce this valuable healing art to those who want good health, and do not know how to get it.

Du and Ren Meridians Meridians are the chi channels along which the acupuncture point are distributed. In the human body, there are twelve regular meridians pertaining to the twelve internal organs, all of which connect with the extremities. Six of the these are yang meridians, and six are yin meridians. There are eight additional meridians, and the Du and Ren are two of them. The Du meridian starts from the inside of the lower abdomen and emerges from the perinium. It then runs along the middle line of back and passes over the top of head and then goes downward through the forehead and finally ends at the upper palate.

The Ren meridian originates from the same place as the Du meridian and emerges from the perinium. It runs back along the middle line of abdomen and chest and then reaches the lower palate. Two branches run around the lip and then ascend to the cheek region . The Du meridian is a yang meridian and meets all the other yang meridians, so it is called "the sea of yang meridians". The Ren meridian is a yin meridian and meets all the other yin meridians, so it is called "the sea of yin meridians".

Opening Du and Ren meridians

There are many acupuncture points along the Du and Ren meridians. Many of us hold a lot of blockages along these two meridians. According to Chinese Medicine, blockages are the main cause of most health problems. To relieve health problems, to keep good health, we must keep our meridians clear and free from blockages. Because the Du and Ren meridians are the "sea of all the meridians", keeping the Du and Ren meridians clear can lead to the opening of all the meridians.

To open the Du and Ren meridians, we need some special techniques. For most of us, these two meridians are not easy to open. Time and practice are needed. How much depends on the sensitivities of one's meridians. The sensitivities of meridians varies significantly from person to person. Basically, there are four types of meridian sensitivities: very sensitive meridians(type 1), sensitive meridians(type 2), not sensitive meridians(type 3), and insensitive meridians(type 4). There are about 10% of the people who have very sensitive meridians, for whom a few hours of practice may be enough to open the two meridians. About 40% of the people have meridians of type 2 and another 40% have meridians of type 3. For these people, from ten to a hundred hours may be needed to get the Du and Ren meridians clear. About 10% of those having insensitive meridians may not be able to feel chi along the Du and Ren meridians.

In order to open meridians, we have to open the acupuncture points first. The acupuncture points are the gates along the meridians. Blockages are usually held at the acupuncture points. By special training with chigong masters, people may feel the chi move in the Du and Ren meridians within a greatly reduced period of time. At the Universe Chigong Healing Center in Davis, California, students are guaranteed to be helped in opening their Du and Ren meridians within 20 hours with the assistance of Chigong masters. To open the Du and Ren meridians faster, the chigong master's help is important.

If there is no Chigong master available in your area, two or more people practicing together as a group should be helpful. Two people can help each other in the following way: Rub your palms together to produce heat and then put your palms on each other's ten acupuncture points mentioned below one by one, and then do the Body Universe Circulation as follows.

Gentle Body Universe Circulation

In Gentle Body Universe Circulation, you are just required to keep yourself as comfortable as you can, standing, sitting or lying. You should totally relax and breathe naturally. After deep relaxation, think about the main acupuncture points one by one along the Du and Ren meridians, starting from Rd 1, through Rd 2, Rd 3, ... to Rd 10, and repeat this procedure over again and again.

In the beginning, you may not feel anything on the acupuncture points while you are concentrating on them. But with practice, you will experience warm, cold, tingling, itching, vibrating, pain, or some other sensation. When you feel something different, you are feeling the Chi. That means that the acupuncture point you have focused on is open. When you have opened all ten of the acupuncture points (or most of them), you can link all these points into a circle. It is called small universe or Xiao Zhou Tian in Chinese. You should keep the Chi circulating along this orbit or universe to enhance your chi and then concentrate on your lower abdomen for a moment to store your chi.

After you finish the Body Universe Circulation, you should do some closing exercises. Do each of the following exercises for 1 minute: rub your hands together; rub your face with your hands; comb your hair with your fingers (you should touch your head with the tips of your fingers while you are combing your hair); pat your head; rub your ears; rub your Dazhui point (Rd 5) and finally move your head as a crane drinks water.

Intense Body Universe Circulation

To do intense Body Universe Circulation, you are required to sit on the front third of the chair and keep your upper body upright. Breathe in and out deeply and slowly. When you breathe in contract lower abdomen. (This breath style is called "reverse breath".) Touch your tongue to your upper palate when breathing in; meanwhile contract your anus and kidneys. Image that the Chi is going up along the Du meridian from Rd 3, passing through your head and reaching your upper palate as you breathe in. While breathing out, put your tongue on your lower palate and image the Chi going down from the upper palate to the lower abdomen. Repeat this process again and again for approximately 10 minutes.

Do the same ending exercise as in the gentle Body Universe Circulation. Typically, the Intense Body Universe Circulation should be practiced along with the Gentle Body Universe Circulation. The sequence is as follows: Intense Body Universe Circulation, Gentle Body Universe Circulation, concentration on the lower abdomen and then do the closing exercises.

Functions of The Body Universe Circulation

Body Universe circulation has many beneficial effects on a person's body. Its main function is to improve health. There is a Chinese saying "as soon as you can practice Xiao Zhou Tian, hundreds of diseases will disappear". Body Universe Circulation can help to enhance internal Chi (the life force), clear up blockages along meridians, and strengthen the immune system. As a result, Body Universe Circulation can effectively relieve many chronic pains, prevent illness, improve the function of the brain, develop ultra-function, such as opening the third eye, and prolong life.

The quality and quantity of life depends on the chi in an individual's body. The chi in our bodies can be classified as primary Chi and acquired Chi. The primary Chi comes from one's parents at conception. It is also called yuan chi. Yuan Chi is the life force. As one grows up and becomes old, yuan Chi become weaker and weaker. This is why older people are more likely to become ill than younger ones. Body Universe Circulations can effectively enhance yuan Chi or at least prevent its loss, and therefore can prevent illness and aging. Acquired chi comes from food and air. It supports human activity, but it functions well only when the yuan chi is strong enough. If the yuan chi is weak, the acquired chi can not work well. Body Universe Circulation is the most effective way to cultivate yuan chi.

Question and discussion

Certain people may think that some forms of chigong might cause problems to the person who practices them. Generally speaking, the Body Universe Circulation does not have any negative side-effects. However people who have already developed some kind of health problems may have the experience of deterioration. This is because the Chi is working on these problems and makes the symptoms more obvious for a certain period, usually only for a few days. After that, the symptoms will disappear. Occasionally, there is a period during which the chi is working hard to clear up blockages and open up meridians and during this time people may feel more pain or feel discomfort somewhere in the body. Such feelings usually last just few days and then there is a recovery.

Body Universe Circulation has been practiced for about fifteen hundred years, and since it was recently introduced to the public. millions of people have begun to practice the techniques and there have been no reports of any problems which were of concern to some people. However, we still recommend to learn this valuable healing art from Chigong masters.

BALANCING ARTS
(Ping Heng Gong)

Balancing Arts are one form of Taoism Qigong which had been kept in secret by Taoist qigong masters for centuries and was introduced to the public recently by Wang Liping, one of the most powerful Taoist qigong master at our time. Master Wang had been trained by two secluded Taoist qigong masters in Lao Mountain in Shandong Province, China since his childhood and began to serve the public in 1980s. Balancing Arts have been proved to be a very effective way of improving our internal qi, external qi and healing power.

The Balancing Arts were developed on the basis of ancient Tunashu (breathing technique), combined with certain style of body movement, to exchange qi with plants, animals and human bodies and to reach a balance between our internal qi and the qi from the nature. Balancing Arts can efficiently clear up any kind of blockage in our body.

The Balancing Arts can be practiced against trees, human and the universe. For beginners, It is better to practice The Balancing Art against trees, because trees have their roots deep underground, and their body high in the sky. Trees have their own circulation system and have stronger natural qi in their body. Ancient Chinese qigong masters realized that exchanging qi with trees could greatly improve our health many centuries before scientists found that trees gave out oxygen which our human being lives on. Now we can better understand why practicing qigong against trees can improve our health.

The Balancing Art was designed to help the practitioners to be able to emit qi out and take in the qi from the universe. It is a efficient way to bring you the power of healing. Big trees are ideal objects to exchange your qi. Ancient Chinese qigong masters found that tree have the qi which we need and different trees have different qi which can improve our different internal organs differently. This can be better explained with the theory of Five Elements.

Ancient qigong masters found that different trees contain different color elements. For example, pine tree have green element; willow trees have yellow element; poplar trees have white element; cypress trees have black element and apple trees or phoenix trees have red element. In the theory of Five Elements, pine tree belong to wood element, apple tree and phoenix tree belong to fire element, willow tree belong to earth element, poplar tree belong to gold element and cypress tree belong to water element. In our body, liver is wood element. Heart is fire element. Spleen is earth element. Lungs are gold element.

Kidneys are water element. The relations of the five elements are as these: Wood generates fire; fire generates earth; earth generate gold; gold generates water and water generates wood. This is called generating cycle. There also exists a destroying cycle, it is as this: wood destroys earth; earth destroys water; water destroys fire; fire destroys gold and gold destroys wood.

The illustration and table can help you to understand and remember the relations of The Five Elements. Knowing this, you will know which trees you need to exchange your qi with according to your health situation.

Basically, practicing the balancing arts against:

- Pine trees will help to improve your liver function
- Apple trees or phoenix trees will improve your heart function
- Willow trees will improve your spleen function
- Poplar trees will improve your lung function
- Cypress trees will improve your kidney function.

If you have problems with particular organs, you can choose the relevant trees to practice the balancing arts. It is very important to know that the generating and destroying cycle between the five elements. For example, if you have liver problems, you need to practice the balancing arts against pine tree. But sometime it may not work. This is not because the knowledge is wrong. It may be because your liver problems are caused by lack of kidney qi. According to the theory of Five Elements, kidney qi generates liver qi. If the kidney qi is depleted, it can not generate liver qi and cause liver problems. It is described as the mother can not breed the son. So the root of the liver problems is the lack of kidney qi. The right way to release this kind of liver problems is to doing the balancing art against cypress trees to improve your kidney qi. You should not practice the balancing arts too much against poplar trees if you have liver problems. Practicing The Balancing Art can strengthen gold qi or lung qi. But if lung qi is too strong it will destroy liver qi and make the liver problems worse. Perfect health is a perfect balance. having this idea in mind, you will know what to do due to your own health situation.

Another important goal you can achieve from the balancing art is building up your healing power. The balancing art can help you to be able to balance your qi, make your qi more powerful and help you to be able to efficiently emit out your qi. In another word, you will be able to connect your qi with someone you want to help. The more you practice the balancing arts, the more healing power you can build up and the better results you can expect.

There are several ways to practice The Balancing Arts against trees, which are introduced as below, so you can begin to practice the unique qigong art and benefit from it right away.

Triangle Connection

Find a wide, strong and healthy tree. Stand three feet away from the tree and relax your whole body. Imagine that the tree is a long beam up into the sky and down into the earth with colors. Remember that there is green color in pine tree, red in apple tree, yellow in willow, white in poplar tree and black in cypress tree. As you breathe out push your hands toward the tree with your fingers up, and imagine the beam of tree is bent against you as you push your hands. Pull your hands back with your fingers facing the tree, and imagine that the beam of tree is bent toward you as you pull your hands back.

If you can feel chi on your fingers, warm, cold or tingling, move your body a little bit away from the tree, and then further and further as long as you can feel chi on your fingers. Keep doing this for about 30 minutes.

Remember that there is green color in pine tree, red in apple tree, yellow in willow, white in poplar tree and black in cypress tree. Imagine that the same color beams come out from your fingers and cut the tree as you move your arms vertically, horizontally or diagonally. The chi is being transferred between the tree and your fingers. Breathe in and out deeply and slowly.

Trunk Against a Tree

Breathe in and out deeply twenty four times and then breath naturally. Keep your mind inside your body. When you breathe in, imagine that all the natural qi from the universe is entering your body from the pores all over your skin. When you breathe out, imagine all the ill qi or negative qi from your body is emitted out from pores all over your skin to the universe, the further the better .
